Memorial Day commemorates the participation of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in the Battle of the Somme. Of the 801 members of the First Newfoundland Regiment who fought in that battle, only 68 answered the roll the next morning.

and in Quebec its moving day. All leases ( according to my Quebec friends) end on July 1st.

One can speculate that it is an easy way to force people to be busy on Canada Day...but I'll keep my mouth shut ;)
