Project Moviewatch: Four months in one!

The story so far: While lamenting the state of the fall TV season and simultaneously bemoaning the amount of time I found myself in front of the computer, the idea struck me that I should actually watch some of the movies in my collection, rather than just letting them sit around gathering dust in what is supposed to be my dining room. And so I resolved to watch a DVD on nights when there's nothing on TV, keep track of what I watch and provide my thoughts on a monthly basis.
The farther I go, the behinder I get. And TV has improved slightly...

O Lucky Man! As much a fan as I am of the other two films in the Mick Travis trilogy, I have to say I was disappointed in O Lucky Man!. The first half hour or so was fairly well-structured, but then the film started going down as many different roads as a misfolded Thomas Guide. It's definitely much more surreal than the other two offerings, If.... and Britannia Hospital. I didn't recognize Helen Mirren, but did spot Graham Crowden and Geoffrey Palmer. |

Rising Damp: The Movie I was expecting something dire, like Are You Being Served? The Movie. Fortunately, this film remake comes out much better. The late Richard Beckinsale was replaced by Christopher Strauli. The film is mostly reworked bits from series episodes, and so feels a little disjointed, but still works OK. |

Slings & Arrows: The Complete Collection Fantastic comedy-drama about the backstage goings-on of a thinly-veiled Stratford Festival. The series caught my eye when Sundance Channel recently aired it. Paul Gross excels as Geoffrey Tennant, the festival's artistic director. William Hutt's performance in the third season is incomparable. |

Battlestar Galactica: Razor The de facto fourth season premiere worked OK, but is not really needed as an introduction to season four. |

The Best of The Price is Right I was happy to see several Bill Cullen episodes included in this set; the rest is all Bob Barker. Most of the first week of The New Price is Right was included, the actual premiere episode was skipped because the very first prize given away was a fur coat. I don't know how well Bob's last week will age, but hopefully it will be as gracefully as he did. |

Battlestar Galactica: Season Three I was prejudiced against this series even before it started, partly from the predecessor's plot being "Mormons in Space", partly from the "ZOMG! Starbuck's a girl!" reaction to the premise. But ![]() |

Goodnight, Sweetheart: Series Three I'm really surprised this time-travelling Britcom isn't out on DVD in the states. The R2 is available at decent prices from amazon.co.uk. |

As Good as It Gets This very sweet movie stars Helen Hunt (swoon!) and Jack Nicholson. I get very nostalgic toward the end because the sidewalk Melvin and Carol are walking down to get to the bakery was one Hilary and I would walk down when I visited her in Brooklyn. (There's also an episode of Mad About You that was filmed along the sidewalk where Hilary and I first kissed.) |

Children of Men When you need a pick-me-up, a feel-good film, stay away from this one. This is a relentlessly gray depiction of a childless future. Good film. |
