the Evacuation Tango, verse 2
Sep. 23rd, 2005 08:24 pmHeard a glimmer of hope on the radio this morning: US 59 was wide open to Victoria. One piece of the puzzle was in hand: the escape route. The other piece needed: gas.
Googled all the gas stations in Victoria, started calling same. Nobody answered the phone.
Checked the Victoria Advocate web site and they had a story about 8000 gallons of gas being bought into town overnight. In fact, they got special permission to violate the dusk-to-dawn curfew (explaining the no-answer on the phone).
So I left Houston at 8 a.m. The place looked like a ghost town. I found gas in Rosenberg, which meant I wouldn't have to go all the way to Victoria. I cut up highway 111 in Edna to US 183, and followed that to I-35 in Austin, and took I-35 to Dallas.
Total drive time: 8 hours.
Total gas bill: around $60.
Feeling of ease at not being in the hurricane zone: priceless.
