This will teach me not to backup my system regularly.
Got home this afternoon and found my computer had frozen. I powered it down (manually) and restarted -- to no avail. Last Known Good option was no good, either. I caught flashes of a BSOD which indicated UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, so I got on my old machine and checked out Microsoft to see what they had to say about it.
I tried their auggestions (after downloading the XP SP2 Setup boot disks, thank you HP for not providing a rescue CD), and nothing helped.
So the computer is now at CompUSA and I should know something in the next couple of days, after the diagnostic runs.
That hard drive is full of data I can't lose. The programs can be reinstalled, but the data files are irreplaceable. I have all of Hilary's E-mails on that machine.
As I just told
ladyrednose, I can't lose that...
So I am on my second machine, hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. Wish me luck!
(And my next big purchase will be an external hard drive for backup purposes. I promise.)
Tuesday morning update: I found a KB article (324764) that may help. Passed the info along to CompUSA. They said the diagnostic was just finishing.
