"New Scientist" does flake out occasionally, but probably less than a quarter of the time.
Also, if the drug is already approved for human beings it can be prescribed "off-label" for other things, at least in the US. So testing could start pretty much, nowish.
TFA mentioned that testing was about to start, through the aegis of universities and not drug companies ("harmaceutical", according to a hilarious typo in TFA).
