Glad I filled up Monday

The station I filled up at on Monday went from $2.49/gallon then to $3.19/gallon today. And there are reports of prices as high as $3.61.
My boss is talking about telecommuting a couple of days a week, and I may do the same if this keeps up.
But it's not only the gas stations that are gouging. Some hotels in the Houston area are jacking up prices to take advantage of the refugees from Hurricane Katrina. The woman at the Attorney General's office who I spoke to earlier said she's been swamped with price gouging reports from this area.

Date: 2005-08-31 06:54 pm (UTC)I filled up at lunchtime yesterday; I found a station near work that was selling unleaded at $2.53 per gallon. As I finished up and left, a guy from the station came out and bumped the prices on the signs to $2.59. The places I'm passing today were at $2.65 - $2.75.
Where are you at that they think they can charge $3.19 per gallon???

Date: 2005-08-31 08:38 pm (UTC)Every year I've noticed that prices have gone up over the summer and then not come down. They're going to do it again this year. We'll be paying $3 per gallon, and it'll just keep going up from there. But sooner or later, the American consumer needs to realize that they have a choice (well, maybe not in Houston). Telecommuting, carpooling, and mass-transit are real options that we need to consider and employ.
Has anyone else heard that American gas prices are just "normalizing" against world gasoline prices, due to globalizing of the market? I knew it was higher elsewhere, but I thought that was because we had more refineries here (greater supply = lower cost).

Attorney General Greg Abbott warned businesses Monday not to exploit Hurricane Katrina victims through price-gouging.
Abbott stated in a press release that his office will closely examine complaints about businesses that drive up prices on lodging and other goods and that complaints will be dealt with aggressively.
In fact, the attorney general's office has already received complaints that a local economy hotel in Nacogdoches inflated prices, and officials plan to head to the area to educate people about their rights, as well as how to file complaints.
“Desperate people have come into Texas in droves, leaving their homes to escape the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” Abbott said. “We will bring legal action against any business that takes advantage of these citizens and their dire circumstances. My office will work closely with local police and district attorneys to aggressively pursue anyone who violates the law by exploiting victims in the wake of this massive storm.”
Mandatory evacuations in Louisiana and Mississippi have forced hundreds of thousands of people to find emergency shelter elsewhere. Hotels in Houston, Beaumont and other area cities could become stopover points for residents fleeing the storm’s path.
People who believe they have been victimized may file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office by calling toll-free 800-252-8011, or by visiting the Attorney General's Web site and clicking on “Consumer Protection.”

If I ran a hotel, I'd give a *discount* to anyone from Louisiana.
