Embarrassment of riches
Apr. 9th, 2005 11:36 pmI discovered that my cable box has a Firewire output. Since my computer has a Firewire input, I decided to hook them together and see what I could do.
I found software that will let me record the HDTV stations. So I tried it out Friday with Joan of Arcadia.
Good news: The quality of the MPG file is phenomenal.
Bad news: The one-hour show, even without commercials, is too big for a DVD.
I figured out why it looks so spectacular: The recording is at 38.8 Mbps! (The maximum a DVD player can handle is 9.8 Mbps.)
Argh. I'll downconvert it when I can.
