"...the first known instance of a man who was killed because he had lousy ratings."

HDNet Movies has been showing "Network" and other films directed by Sidney Lumet. Every time I see it, I am reminded why it's tied (with "American Beauty") for my favorite movie of all time.

"Television will never be the same" is the cutline used on the movie's promotional posters, and it's true. The movie about a network news anchorman who suffers a violent on-air breakdown, is fired and rehired as the "mad prophet of the airways" played as splendid satire in the '70s. One could certainly see it happening in reality today. It is certainly as timely now as it was then.

ObCanCon: "Network" was filmed in the then-brand-new studios of CFTO-TV in Toronto. ObTrivia: The character Howard Beale was named after two streets which intersect in downtown San Francisco. (I found that intersection when [livejournal.com profile] ladycrim was showing me around in the summer of '03.)

May have to break out "American Beauty" tomorrow.

One day of work, then vacation for the rest of the year!

(edited to reflect that it is not "mad prophet of the airwaves" as I have thought over the years, but "mad prophet of the airways" according to the script, which I just downloaded)
