The Caliber was based on the Dodge Neon... I suppose it kinda qualifies as a mini SUV.

And I don't have the budget to go for a $20K car, unfortunately.

www.kbb.com - This is one of the websites I used when my parents and I were figuring out what car to buy a couple of weeks ago.

Counds like it gets decent mileage, though. Most importantly, is it a comfortable drive?

It rides higher than the Neon, but I could get used to that.

It's also louder than the Neon. I'm going to drive it again today to confirm why it's louder -- whether it's the engine, or the extra space in the rear (there was no tonneau cover or carpeting in the rear).

i've never owned a dodge so I am not a good person for input on this one, but I can say its not a subaru I <3 my subaru's :)

I can say Dodge, doesnt hold its value as well as some other brands do.. but Dodge is higher in my books than Ford (anything stands higher than ford)

I agree with you on Fords... You know what Ford stands for? F****d-over rebuilt Dodge.

I've never driven a Subaru so I can't compare the two. But looking at new Subaru prices, I can say they're out of my price range.

And I try to drive my cars into the ground. The blue Neon I had before the white one had 125000 miles on it before I traded it in. It was so worn out, I only got $500 for it, but still, I got a good 8 years out of it.

125,000 miles = barely broken in subaru, my 1995 subi, the green one, with over 200,000 miles on it, was still worth over $2500, my brother bought it, and it is still merrily plugging along with 23 mpg.

FORD = Found on Roadside Dead

My baja has 60,000 miles on it and is still worth more than i paid for it, its a 2003. I love AWD, which is a standard feature on subaru makes rainey roads less scary.

I'm surprised you are considering buying a car new, since they lose value so quickly. You may find the leg room somewhat lacking in a Subaru, redfeather complains about it, but enjoyed driving my legacy.

As for the price they are offering you on that dodge.. looks pretty stanadard as far as pricing goes,
Also, I found you a blue dodge caliber, higher mileage http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7cE-%7cM-_12_%7cD-_8234_%7cN-N%7cR-50%7cI-1%7cP-PRICE+descending%7cQ-descending%7cZ-77006&aff=khou&paId=276746456&recnum=28&leadExists=true lower price or if you prefer silve,r lower mileage and beats the price on the '07 you are looking at http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7cE-%7cM-_12_%7cD-_8234_%7cN-N%7cR-50%7cI-1%7cP-PRICE+descending%7cQ-descending%7cZ-77006&aff=khou&paId=276819710&recnum=32&leadExists=true

here is a subaru same pricerange, older but similar mileage http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7cE-%7cM-_45_%7cN-N%7cR-100%7cI-1%7cP-PRICE+descending%7cQ-descending%7cZ-77006&aff=khou&paId=136080911&recnum=46&leadExists=true

The one I'm looking at is used. (Barely -- it was owned by a leasing company for 9 months, and they bought it new.) I was surprised to see an '07 with as few miles as it has.

What sucks about this car search is the time factor. I have to turn the rental in by Monday. (The insurance company says Enterprise will work with them to let me turn it in here in Houston rather than having to drive back to Dallas to do it.)

If I had more time I could more thoroughly research what's out there, take more test drives, etc.

too bad the car show is not in town ...

Good luck with finding something and yes the fact that chrysler had a hand in that dodge is reassuring for me :) Chrysler, at least the older ones are ok in my books.

Now, my dream car wouldhandle like a subaru, drive forever like a subaru, but have the seats of a Saab

The hubby and I switched from Ford owners (his historical preference) to Chrysler family owners (my historical preference) and he has loved his 300 soooo much, and I adore my Pacifica. That Caliber is adorable, not too bad on gas mileage, and low mileage. I like it!!!

You're asking the wrong Muppet.

I know nothing about cars.

What would it cost if it were new?

Have you Carfaxed it? A lot of people are rough on leased cars.

A new '08 SXT would run $18,000.

There was a link to a Carfax report on the dealer's website. It didn't show anything out of the ordinary.

Y wins!

I put down my deposit today. Financing is being applied for. (I don't expect any trouble on this front.) Should pick up the car tomorrow.
