Without help, that child can carry low self-esteem into adulthood.

Oh, yes, surveys and polls can be manipulated to produce the desired result. There was an excellent episode of Yes Minister on this very subject.

My only perspective on this matter is 30 years' hindsight. My adult life would have been so much better if my parents had noticed during the summer of '73 that something was wrong.
