Project Moviewatch: December report

The story so far: While lamenting the state of the fall TV season and simultaneously bemoaning the amount of time I found myself in front of the computer, the idea struck me that I should actually watch some of the movies in my collection, rather than just letting them sit around gathering dust in what is supposed to be my dining room. And so I resolved to watch a DVD on nights when there's nothing on TV, keep track of what I watch and provide my thoughts on a monthly basis.

Okay, I'm behind. Life happens.

Peter's Friends

Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Tony Slattery in one film, the British Big Chill.

Battlestar Galactica: Season One

I was prejudiced against this series even before it started, partly from the predecessor's plot being "Mormons in Space", partly from the "ZOMG! Starbuck's a girl!" reaction to the premise. [livejournal.com profile] amalthia_ij kept encouraging me to give it a try, and so when Universal HD started rebroadcasting the show, I did. I found the DVD set on sale and started getting ahead of the UHD broadcast, first one week, then two, then I finished the whole thing.

Ever Since the World Ended

Acceptible homemade post-apocalyptic piece which won several awards. It deals with the last 183 people in San Francisco several years after the rest of the human race died in an epidemic.

The Day After

In historical retrospect, this may be the most important TV-movie ever made. It's reported that the film left President Reagan depressed, and changed his mind om prevailing policy. I remember spearheading a special section about the movie for my college newspaper.

The Truth About Cats and Dogs

Sweet film with Janeane Garofalo as a radio host lacking in confidence. (Where have I heard that before?)

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection: Volume Three

Afternoons in my childhood were partly spent watching Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies on channel 11. It's great to finally see a lot of these cartoons not spliced-and-diced to fit commercial time slots.

If....

What a surreal film. I can only imagine what it would be like to watch this film when stoned.

Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries

If I'd known this was included with the Season One package I wouldn't have bought it.

Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown

I've covered this one already.

Star Trek: Enterprise: The Complete Fourth Season

The best season of the prequel series. I concentrated on the "mirror universe" episode, In a Mirror, Darkly. Great DVD presentation. I just wish the series had had this high quality all the way through.

Corner Gas: Season 4

It's been called the Canadian Seinfeld. If you aren't watching this show on CTV or WGN, you should start immediately.

Dave

An enjoyable comedy-drama about a look-alike who takes the place of the President of the United States, who suffers a stroke during a tryst at a Washington hotel.

Men with Brooms

Timed to capitalize on the curling boomlet that followed the 2002 Winter Olympics, this is a cute film about a curling team reunited after the death of their skip. The adorable Molly Parker (who I started crushing on after watching Twitch City features prominently.

Jerry Springer: the Opera

Very very funny, very very adult in content, ruled by the High Court to not be blasphemous when taken in context, this was a hit in London's West End for two years and a tour thereafter. Featuring hummable tunes like Mamma Gimmee Smack on the Asshole, This is My Jerry Springer Moment, and Diaper Man, the first act plays like an episode of The Jerry Springer Show. The second and third acts take Jerry through purgatory and hell. The disc is rated 18 for very good reason.

The Lathe of Heaven

I strongly remember this made-for-PBS adaptation of the Ursula LeGuin novel from my high school years. It was filmed in Dallas, and City Hall and Reunion Tower take prominent roles as Dr. Haber's two clinics. A former girlfriend was an extra.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Ah, Star Trek: The Motion Sickness. It was a triumphant return for the Trek franchise, despite it being overlong and tedious in places. What more nees to be said, all these years later?

Jeopardy!: An Inside Look At America's Favorite Quiz Show!

A. It contains five complete episodes, one with multiple angles, and several documentaries, but sadly ignores the Fleming years, where I cut my teeth on the show.
Q. What is Jeopardy!: An Inside Look At America's Favorite Quiz Show!?

That's probably because only three Fleming episodes are known to exist, but you probably knew that already. :)

I agree completely about Enterprise season 4 being the best. Too bad it was preceded by the stupid season 3 major tragedy on Earth which is so far out of canon as to be ridiculous. :-)

I forgot to say, this is a great idea, and much more entertaining than the usual network fare.
