You're tuned to K-what?

A few years ago, when North Texas State University became the University of North Texas, we in the media were joking that the university's radio station, KNTU, would have to change its call sign to KUNT.

That didn't happen, for obvious reasons.

Well, now a TV station in Hawaii has requested and received that call sign.

The station's owners have apologized and promised to change the call sign as soon as possible.

They also received the call sign KWTF for another station...

I'm showing my age when I can remember other call letters that couldn't be assigned, such as KUSA and WUSA.

See, now I think someone should keep KWTF. They should make it a mostly talk/news network sharing only bizarre, offbeat, puzzling, and facepalm-worthy stories. They can have a couple of music programs, too, but the nature of the music - be it through subject matter or poor performance/execution - would have to keep in the spirit of the rest of KWTF.

Also in the Dallas Market....

... is the Christian Easy Listening station KLTY, whose initials are never, ever made into a word in any way. At least not by their target audience.

I have a friend who at one point in his life was a DJ. He worked for a San Fransisco station called KOME. He was later fired and black listed by the FCC for this remark, "Don't touch that dial, there's KOME on it!" :-P

there is a christian station called KYBJ.
They must not have known...

When was WUSA first assigned? Channel 9 here has used it since 1986, and it's my understanding that was after another station somewhere gave it up.

It was around that time. I know I was in college when they loosened the rule, and that was '82-'86. Gannett snapped up both WUSA and KUSA.

The Denver station switched calls in 1984.

[identity profile] fapiece.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure about that? I would think a Denver station would begin with K.

Yes... to KUSA.

Got it now. I thought you meant the station that gave up the WUSA call letters before WDVM switched to it in '86.

So now I'm totally confused. I clearly remember a Minnesota station being involved in all this, but that couldn't have been WUSA, because a Minnesota station would've had to begin with K if they picked up the call letters after '82... so I figured that must've been KUSA, but no, that's in Denver!

So what was this Minnesota station's involvement? And where was the original WUSA located? I have no idea, but the proper response is, "Just ask Joe!" :)

Could they become KNUT, and use the bear as their mascot? :)

Shades of the web updating software at my company. It's been Locals On Line (LOL), Web Technology Framework (WTF), and now goes by the initials of its developer - FCK.
